Are Home Grown Vegetables Boring?

  1. Well, they're certainly more interesting than TV, in my opinion.
Have a great weekend! We're expecting rain-I think I will be able to get reacquainted with the house. And blanche and chop and freeze and can.............

    1. I agree Sue, but I'm sure many millions of others would not, hope you get your rain (we are often promised rain by the forecasters that fails to materialise) and get lots of reacquainting done.

  2. Richard Scarry would have been impressed with your courgette and boredom doesn't come it!

    1. Its quite scary that I've been an illustrator for over twenty five years and not heard of Richard Scarry, but I suppose there's always another interesting illustrator lurking in some forgotten corner and he is certainly a nice discovery reminding me a little of Jean de Brunhoff of barbar the elephant. Thanks. PS just eaten some excellent courgette cake, there so versatile!

  3. One of my favourite and funny things at the local agricultural shows are the kids classes for making animals out of vegetables. Your Ford Courgette really reminds me of them and made me laugh - thanks :) . I also like the one with the man trying to woo the woman with a pumpkin. Once my boyfriend brought me a REALLY big slice of cheese back from France - I was impressed.

    1. I once did a project with some nursery school children about all the different kinds of pumpkins and squashes, they loved it and it went really well. However, interesting my wife in the joys of pumpkin growing is not currently as successful. The reason is that this year my pumpkin vines have gone into overdrive and completely smothered every other crop (including a reasonably robust apple tree). Not content with their dominance of the allotment, they have now a started a rampant annexation of the garden. So actually her disinterest has developed, fairly understandably into dissatisfaction bordering on open pumpkin hostility. I'm starting to hope for an early frost!

    2. To be honest I can't understand the culinary point of pumpkin - ok, once maybe is ok...but they go on...and on...and on. And clearly not only in the 'trying to think of something interesting to cook' department. I'm with your wife.

However, I am interested in your courgette cake...another vegetable that challenges one in the abundance stakes. Would you share your recipe?

    3. my specialism is more in the eating rather than the cooking of cakes but I will try and retrieve the recipe for you. The cooking of pumpkins is a different matter though. I agree that they do go on and on, especially the large ones and it does at times challenge culinary creativity. If you choose the right varieties though, not the watery halloween types they can be very tasty and you don't have to be a self confessed obsessive like me to enjoy looking at them . . . . but it helps.
